St. Mary’s NHS Treatment Centre

This project involved the creation of a new independent sector health treatment center that provides state-of-the-art facilities, including consulting rooms, operating rooms, and day-case beds. Services include day surgery, diagnostic investigations, minor injury unit/walk-in unit, and diabetic retinopathy eye screening. The project was a fast-track design-build using an off-site modular system.

Elementa Consulting provided a full range of mechanical and electrical services and technical advice for the project, including low-energy strategies to ensure compliance with NHS carbon guidelines.

The building at St. Mary’s Portsmouth was chosen to be of modular construction by Yorkon for the benefits of reduced on-site program time and the lack of site space for materials and storage. The Trust wanted the building to have an impact as it was next to the main entrance to the hospital. The building form had interesting features, including a double-height entrance.

The Modular construction process is best suited to regular box-shaped sections with vertical structures at standard spacing. The desire to have a more complex look at the building did compromise the program and required some significant on-site steelwork installation. Early production of full working drawings for each module section was essential in getting the service distribution established. Even with this level of detail, medical gases had to be installed after construction to ensure pipework system cleanliness.
