Joe Quad Presents Charting New Territory in Passive House: Clayton Community Centre

North American Passive House Network’s 2018 conference (NAPHN18) convenes in a hotspot of Passive House design and construction: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thanks to a strong professional base, innovative governmental policy supporting Passive House, and a community of forward-thinking developers and housing agencies, Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest concentrations of major Passive House and other deep green development on the continent.

The theme for NAPHN18 is Passive (House) First: It’s About Resilience – Not Just Rating Systems.

Integral Group is proud to be represented by Mechanical Designer Joe Quad, as a presenter in the session:

Charting New Territory in Passive House: Clayton Community Centre

Innovations | Saturday, October 20, 2018 | 3:00pm – 3:30pm

While the Passive House standard is experiencing spectacular growth across North America, over 80% of certified Passive House buildings are residential projects. Adoption of the performance based standard in the commercial sector is increasing at a slower pace, possibly due to lack of experience and precedent projects. How can Passive House chart new territory and be applied to sectors other than residential? Are the lessons learned from residential Passive House projects applicable to commercial Passive House projects?

In this session, HCMA Architecture + Design and Integral Group will share their experience working collaboratively on the largest Community Centre in North America targeting Passive House certification: the 76000 sqf Clayton Community Centre located in the City of Surrey, British Columbia. Through sharing their Passive House journey, the leading practitioners will highlight the potential that an integrated design approach offers in overcoming wide-ranging challenges to achieve Passive House Certification for a recreation center. From high internal heat gains to uncommon plug loads and hybrid ventilation systems, the architectural and mechanical teams will share multiple tips and tricks to successfully complete large-scale Passive House projects.
