Andy Chong Presents Passive House Design for Commercial Offices at NAPHN18

North American Passive House Network’s 2018 conference (NAPHN18) convenes in a hotspot of Passive House design and construction: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thanks to a strong professional base, innovative governmental policy supporting Passive House, and a community of forward-thinking developers and housing agencies, Pennsylvania is home to one of the largest concentrations of major Passive House and other deep green development on the continent.

The theme for NAPHN18 is Passive (House) First: It’s About Resilience – Not Just Rating Systems.

Integral Group is proud to be represented by Principal Andy Chong, as a presenter in the session:

Passive House Design for Commercial Offices – Scaling Up, Design Tools, Overheating, and a Client’s Motivation

Innovations II | Saturday, October 20, 2018 | 1:45pm – 2:45pm

In this presentation, Andy Chong, Mechanical Engineer and Principal, Integral Group, and Mark Bernhardt, Contractor and Owner, Bernhardt Construction, discuss the application of Passive House as a design philosophy and certification framework for commercial office projects, and present a case study of the Charter Telecom Headquarters underway on Vancouver Island, BC in the Pacific Northwest.

This speaker session will address cooling design, internal gains, and mitigating overheating risk, as well as scaling up traditional PH construction materials and techniques for larger, more complex buildings seeking PH certification.  The presentation will also look at “Why?” and consider the motivations for a commercial client to choose Passive House certification over other frameworks such as LEED and the local energy “step” code.
