Surbiton Health Centre

This project comprised creating a new health care center, primary school, and nursery as part of a site-wide master plan to redevelop the former Surbiton Hospital site. This site was used to provide a new 446-place primary school, Lime Tree Primary, to meet local demand for school places and a new health center to serve 73,000 patients.

The health center incorporates various diagnostic and treatment facilities, including forty consulting and examination rooms, fifteen consulting and minor treatment rooms, an operations suite, minor injuries unit, an audiology assessment booth, a mammography department, an x-ray department, a retinal screening, and dental suite. Each room type has particular service requirements and demands, including underfloor heating and natural ventilation in the consulting and examination rooms, a dedicated full fresh air system serving the operations suite, and air conditioning within the x-ray department, where there are high equipment demands.

Low carbon features include the development of achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating, backed by a large photovoltaic array and a 60kW (thermal) combined heat and power generation set. At the same time, the whole site is designed to encourage green travel in line with GLA directives, including the provision of 12 parking spaces with electric car charging points. The health center and school were completed on time and within budget. The school opened in September 2012, and the health center received its first patients in March 2013.
