East Oxford Health Center
Location: Oxford, UK
Architect: Hunter & Partners
The East Oxford Health Center houses two GP practices and accommodates, among other elements, the PCT’s dental services, podiatry unit, physiotherapy unit, dietetics service, community phlebotomy service, the child protection service, midwifery services and the Oxford out of hours service (OxEMS). The center is a part of the community in a very real way with key worker housing on the upper floor and a community café providing a welcoming meeting point. Health visitors and district nurses are based at the centre along with the city’s intermediate care team. This project followed the completion of the Leys Health Center, the first project delivered through the Oxford LIFT. This was a $6,425,000 (£4,000,000) project providing a total healthcare facility including a doctors’ surgery, a community-nursing unit, a pharmacy, a dental practice and a private nursery.
Integral/Elementa’s work included the provision of all mechanical and electrical services. We worked very closely with the PCT, architects, design team and all stakeholders in order to produce a scheme which minimised environmental impact and facilitated a low energy efficient building. The building was thermally modelled to ensure natural ventilation would be adequate to keep the internal conditions within NHS guidelines whilst maximising natural daylighting.
