Kevin is internationally recognized as a leader in sustainable design and for his contributions to the building industry. Over the past decade he has gained a reputation as an innovator, pioneer, and green business leader, creating transformative strategies as former President and CEO of Keen Engineering and Vice President of Stantec. Kevin served as the Chair of the USGBC for 2005-2006, and is a founder and director of CanadaGBC.
Peter Rumsey, PE, FASHRAE – Director, West Coast
A national leader in the design of low energy buildings, Peter has designed mechanical systems for data centers, cleanrooms and laboratories that are among the most energy efficient in the U.S. He is a registered professional engineer in 10 states, a certified energy manager, and a Senior Fellow of Rocky Mountain Institute. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley’s mechanical engineering program and is a frequent lecturer at industry events, conferences, and colleges and universities, including U.C. Berkeley and Stanford University. The focus of Peter’s career has been transforming the building industry by designing affordable and dramatically energy efficient buildings.
Tom Simpson, PE, LEED AP – Director, East Coast
Tom brings over three decades of experience to our group and is an accomplished designer and leader for a board range of project types including corporate offices, mission critical, secondary and higher education, retail, cultural, civic, multi-family residential and industrial systems and facilities. His career path in the field of energy generation and efficiency has resulted in a deep understanding and strong commitment to sustainable design solutions. Tom is also responsible for Integral’s international projects, with much recent work primarily focused in the Middle East.

As one of the founders of Integral Group, Stephen brings over 30 years of national and international experience in the design and installation of building services, and provides leadership in the delivery of Energy Services, including Commissioning and Energy Performance evaluations and upgrades. Stephen’s deep expertise in many market sectors, including historic renovation, healthcare, corporate, commercial, and hospitality, provides a seasoned and well rounded resource to the fully integrated design approach that is central to Integral Group’s practice.
John Dorr, PE, LEED AP – Managing Director, Integral Group (NC), PLLC, Raleigh, NC
John has worked in the consulting engineering field for over 25 years with a broad range of experience including project management, design team leadership, construction administration and commissioning. John is a registered electrical engineer with expertise in systems for various building types and market sectors including healthcare, higher education, laboratories, mission critical, corporate and commercial. John has significant experience delivering small, medium, and large scale projects (often fast track), all with the same attention to detail, resulting in the high quality facilities to which our clients are accustomed.

Heading up the bioclimatic design practice at Integral Group, John brings more than 25 years of engineering experience in higher education, health care, commercial and laboratory design to the team. His career has coupled innovative technical designs with energy and resource efficiency. He has built an engineering practice focused on green buildings and energy efficiency in the high tech industry. Through integrated design, eco-charrettes, and with an eye on the triple-bottom line (people, planet, profit), John focuses on “design synergies” and “cost transfer” opportunities that yield the greatest environmental and social bottom line results without sacrificing the all-important economic bottom line. John believes that sustainable design is an engineer’s social responsibility and has served as the Project Manager and Principal In Charge on numerous LEED projects, including seven projects targeting Platinum certification, and six targeting net zero energy.

Mr. McDonald is recognized as one of the nation’s leading green mechanical engineers for laboratories and animal facilities. He’s managed and designed new and renovation projects for a variety of clients including universities, R&D bio-pharmaceutical and government institutions. He has a vast knowledge of commercial air conditioning systems, as well as power, lighting, plumbing and specialty water systems.
David Kaneda, AIA, PE, LEED AP – Managing Director, San Jose
David’s experience includes over two decades working in the building industry in North America and Europe. He is the founder of IDeAs and a professional engineer, a licensed architect, an award winning lighting designer and a MBA. His responsibilities include strategic planning, sustainability research, peer review, conceptual design and interdisciplinary coordination.
Martin Friedman – Managing Partner, Integral Group, Toronto
Martin has over 30 years experience in the building services industry as a mechanical engineer working on large developments throughout Canada and around the world. His experience includes an array of building types including mixed use, healthcare, retail, resort and university projects. Key projects include Jebel Ali Project (Dubai, UAE), Don Mills Shopping Centre (Toronto, Ontario) and the Mazagan Resort Hotel Casino Entertainment Center (El Jadida, Morocco).
With a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Martin has extensive experience in the areas of HVAC and refrigeration consulting engineering. He is a results-oriented professional with a passion for creating sustainable communities through excellence in building design. Martin’s demonstrated leadership abilities have given him the opportunity to pass on valuable technical knowledge to engineers-in-training through effective coaching and mentoring.
SK Lai – Managing Partner, Cobalt Engineering, Vancouver, BC
Since joining the firm in 1990, SK has specialized in healthcare design including project management and prime consulting work in energy efficiency upgrades. Most recently, he became the Partner-in-Charge of P3 (Public-Private Partnership) Projects in BC and he participated as the Advisory/Shadow Consultant for Diamond Health Care Centre with Vancouver Coastal Health in the first P3 health care project in BC. SK’s passion is convincing clients to think about using passive systems rather than traditional inefficient, active mechanical systems. SK adopts a holistic perspective and encourages design teams to adopt a global approach. He develops projects for the future that blend innovative designs with improved functionality. One of his recent projects is the 1.5 million ft2 Millennium Water development, which includes the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Athletes’ Village.

Goran has over 20 years of experience working as an engineer and energy consultant and is recognized as a global player in energy efficiency and sustainable building design. Prior to joining the Cobalt team, he was involved with international projects in Europe, which provides him with a unique perspective on design and documentation in North America. While working with Cobalt Engineering, Goran has been responsible for many innovative projects in energy- efficient design and analysis including pioneering the use of many different systems such as radiant cooling systems, capillary radiant systems, variable refrigerant flow and displacement ventilation.

Conrad has been an instrumental leader in both the introduction of VRF Technology and CO2 refrigeration technology to Canada.
Conrad’s past experience working with top Fortune 500 companies, including Hitachi and Mitsubishi, gives him the knowledge and expertise to introduce cutting-edge technologies in North America that are proven in other parts of the world.
